Shyla sat in the porch swing, her eyes following the horizon. Her hair was pulled up in a messy bun, and she looked serene, unaware that her world was about to shift.

"Shy," Zashery said, her voice trembling but resolute. "I need to tell you something. Something big. It’s about Kai."

Shyla blinked, confused. “Kai? What about him? Is he okay?”

Zashery took a deep breath and sat beside her. “He’s fine. But... you need to know the truth. I’ve known it for years, and I didn’t tell you because I wanted to protect everyone. But it’s eating me alive.”

Now Shyla turned fully to face her. “What truth?”

Zashery hesitated. Then the words rushed out like a flood. “Kai is not Anthony’s son.”

“That’s not true,” Shyla whispered, shaking her head. “Of course he is. We were together then, Anthony and I—he was there when Kai was born—he raised him—”

“But he’s not the father,” Zashery interrupted gently. “I was there, remember? That summer. The one Anthony went away for work for three months? You barely talked about it later, but I knew something had happened. You were… different when he came back. Quieter. Guiltier.”

Shyla’s eyes filled with tears.

“You met someone else, didn’t you?” Zashery continued. “Just once. Maybe twice. And then Anthony came back, and you both pretended like nothing ever happened.”

Shyla buried her face in her hands. “I thought it didn’t matter. I never even got confirmation. I never did a test. Anthony loved Kai like he was his own. I didn’t want to break that.”

Zashery touched her arm. “I get it. But the thing is, the truth… it has a way of coming up. Kai is starting to ask questions. You’ve seen it. He doesn’t understand why he looks nothing like Anthony’s side. Why his blood type doesn’t make sense. You know he found those papers, right?”

Shyla’s face snapped up, stunned. “What papers?”

“A hospital record. From the birth. It had the blood types. Kai’s O-negative. You’re A. Anthony was AB. That’s impossible, Shy. He’s starting to connect the dots.”

Shyla was pale now, her breath ragged. “Oh my God…”

“And I know who the real father is,” Zashery added. “You don’t have to guess anymore.”

Shyla’s lips parted. “Who?”

Zashery paused. “Dorian.”

The name landed like a thunderclap. Shyla’s eyes widened in disbelief. “Dorian? My ex from college? That… that summer…”

“You ran into him again, didn’t you?” Zashery asked quietly. “When Anthony was gone. He was visiting his aunt nearby. You two reconnected. I remember how your smile came back for a while. But then it vanished. You shut it all down and went back to being perfect Shyla with perfect Anthony. You never told Dorian.”

“I didn’t know,” Shyla whispered, trembling. “I didn’t know.”

“Well,” Zashery said, her voice soft but steady, “now you do. And so does Kai. I didn’t mean for it to come out the way it did, but he overheard me talking to Mom.”

Shyla stood, dazed. “What do I do?”

Zashery stood too and pulled her into a hug. “You tell the truth. To Kai. To Anthony. And if you want… to Dorian. It won’t be easy, Shy. But they all deserve to know.”
