Anthony (mutters):
“Man, not this again…”

A few hours later, Shayla shows up. She looks nervous. Anthony already got that “what now” look on his face. He opens the door slowly.

“What’s going on, Shayla? You alright?”

“Can I come in first?”

She walks in, looking around like she doesn’t want to sit but also doesn’t want to stand.

“Okay so… before you get all dramatic… I just need to say something.”

Anthony:
“Shayla…what is it? You done crashed the car again?”

Shayla (sighs deeply):
“No. I think I’m pregnant. Again.”

Anthony freezes. He squints like he didn’t hear her right.

“…Pregnant? Again?! Shayla…we JUST got back cool! You told me you was on birth control!”

Shayla (defensive):
“I was! But then I missed like… three days. And then…you remember that night after your cousin’s BBQ?”

“Lawd, not after the ribs! I knew somethin’ felt too good that night…”

Long silence. Shayla sits on the edge of the couch, Anthony pacing in circles.

Anthony:
“I ain’t even got no new job yet! I just got back in church, and now this? I’m tryna turn my life around, Shayla!”

Shayla (softly):
“I haven’t even taken a test yet. I just…feel pregnant. Like how I felt last time.”

Anthony (staring at her stomach):
“You feel pregnant? What that even mean? You cravin’ pickles or something?”

Shayla (firmly):
“No, Anthony. It’s my body. I know when something’s off.”

Anthony (sighs):
“Alright. Let’s go get a test then. I can’t be out here stressin’ off vibes.”

Scene cuts to the drug store. Anthony looks overwhelmed, holding three different pregnancy test boxes. Shayla is quiet, tense.

Cut to Shayla in the bathroom. Anthony is pacing like he's waiting on a court verdict. Finally, the door opens…

Shayla (calling out):
“Anthony… it’s negative.”

Anthony drops to the couch in relief like he just won the lottery.

“Thank you, Jesus! I was about to call my mama and cry.”

Shayla (smirking):
“That don’t mean we off the hook. We need to talk for real this time. About us. About being careful. About being grown.”

Anthony nods, serious now.

Anthony:
“You right. We can’t keep playing like this. I want peace. I want purpose. I don’t want no more close calls.”

Shayla:
“Then let’s act like it.”
