Amber’s Heart Stops for a Second When She Sees the Positive Test That Will Change Everything
Amber sat on the edge of her bathtub, her hands trembling slightly as she stared at the little white stick lying on the counter. The bathroom was quiet except for the soft hum of the ceiling fan and the pounding of her heart in her ears. She had told herself it was impossible. It had to be. She was just late — work had been stressful, and she hadn’t been sleeping much. That was all.
But now, looking at the faint but unmistakable pink line slowly darkening, her breath caught in her throat.
Her heart stopped for a second.
It was real.
She pressed a shaky hand against her mouth, a thousand thoughts crashing through her mind at once. How could this be happening? What will I do? What will he say? The world suddenly felt smaller, quieter — as if time had paused to let the truth sink in.
Amber sank to the floor, pulling her knees close, her eyes fixed on the test. Just yesterday, she had been thinking about applying for that promotion, planning a weekend trip with her friends, and maybe—just maybe—finally starting over after months of uncertainty. But now, everything looked different.
In the other room, her phone buzzed with a message from Jason: “Hey, you okay? You’ve been quiet today.”
Her chest tightened. Jason — her boyfriend of two years — had always talked about waiting a little longer before “thinking about kids.” They had dreams, plans, things they wanted to do first. And yet, here she was, sitting on the cold bathroom tiles, holding proof that those plans had just changed forever.
She thought about calling him right away. But the words wouldn’t come. Instead, she just sat there, tears rolling silently down her cheeks — not of fear, not entirely of joy, but of awe. Because in that moment, she realized that inside her, something new was beginning.
After a long while, she finally stood up, wiped her face, and took a deep breath. Her reflection in the mirror looked the same, but she felt different — softer, stronger, and more fragile all at once. She whispered to her reflection, “It’s going to be okay,” though she wasn’t sure if she was convincing herself or the tiny life she had just learned existed.
When she finally stepped out of the bathroom, she carried the test with her — not as proof of fear, but as a promise. Her world had just tilted on its axis, and though she didn’t know what the future held, she knew one thing for certain: nothing would ever be the same again.
