It was nearly midnight when Shayla finally pushed open the door to her apartment, her heels dangling from her fingers and frustration written all over her face. The city lights flickered through the window, but instead of the glow feeling romantic, it only reminded her of how the evening had gone completely wrong.

Anthony was already there, stretched out on the couch, scrolling through his phone. The moment he saw her expression, he sat up.

“Whoa,” he said softly. “That bad?”

Shayla tossed her purse onto the table and exhaled sharply. “You will not believe what Amber did tonight.”

Anthony raised an eyebrow. He knew that tone. “What happened?”

Shayla sank down beside him, crossing her arms. “She made me pay my own tab.”

Anthony blinked. “Okay… and?”

“And?” Shayla stared at him. “Anthony, she invited me out. She said, ‘Don’t worry, tonight’s on me. Let’s celebrate.’ Her exact words.”

Anthony frowned. “Celebrate what?”

“Her promotion,” Shayla replied. “She got that new position at work and wanted to ‘treat her favorite people.’ Apparently, I’m not as favorite as I thought.”

Anthony leaned back, giving her his full attention now. “Start from the beginning.”

The night had started with excitement. Amber had picked the trendiest rooftop restaurant in town—dim lights, soft music, and a skyline view that made everything look magical. Shayla had even dressed up more than usual, curling her hair and wearing that deep blue dress Anthony loved.

“When I got there,” Shayla continued, “Amber was already two drinks in. She hugged me like we hadn’t seen each other in years.”

“Was she drunk?” Anthony asked.

“Tipsy. But not out of control.”

They ordered cocktails, appetizers, then a full dinner. Amber kept insisting on trying “just one more thing.” Shayla didn’t think twice about it—after all, Amber had said she was paying. They laughed about old memories, gossiped about work, even planned a weekend trip.

“It felt normal,” Shayla said quietly. “Like we were actually close again.”

Anthony nodded. He knew Shayla had always valued her friendships deeply—sometimes more than she valued her own comfort.

“So when did it change?” he asked.

Anthony stared at her. “After she said it was on her?”

“Yes!” Shayla threw her hands up. “I reminded her, Anthony. I literally said, ‘I thought you were treating tonight?’ And she just shrugged and said, ‘Well, yeah, but we both ordered a lot.’”

Anthony let out a slow breath. “That’s… not cool.”

“It’s not even about the money,” Shayla said, her voice softening. “I could’ve paid for my meal without a problem. But don’t promise something and then switch it up when the bill shows up.”

She looked down at her hands. “It felt embarrassing. Like I’d done something wrong.”

Anthony shifted closer to her. “You didn’t.”

“I know,” Shayla whispered. “But the waiter was standing there. People at the next table could hear. I didn’t want to argue, so I just handed over my card.”

There had been an awkward silence after that. Amber had gone right back to talking about herself—her boss, her new office, her bigger salary. Not once did she acknowledge how uncomfortable she’d made Shayla feel.

“I think what hurt the most,” Shayla admitted, “is that it showed me something about her. If she can’t even stand by her word over dinner, what else is she casual about?”

Anthony watched her carefully. “Do you think she did it on purpose?”

Shayla hesitated. “Maybe she didn’t expect the total to be that high. Maybe she panicked. But instead of owning it, she shifted it onto me.”

Anthony nodded slowly. “That’s the part that stings. Not the bill—the way she handled it.”

Shayla leaned back against the couch, staring at the ceiling. “I always try to show up for her. Birthdays, breakups, job interviews… I’m there. Tonight just made me feel like I’m… convenient.”

Anthony gently took her hand. “You’re not convenient. You’re loyal. And not everyone knows how to value that.”

For a moment, neither of them spoke. The room felt calmer now.

“So what are you going to do?” he asked.

Shayla thought about it. “I’m not going to make a big scene. But I’m also not going to pretend it didn’t bother me. Next time, if there is a next time, I’ll be clear. And I won’t let anyone put me in that position again.”

Anthony smiled faintly. “That’s my girl.”

She looked at him, a small smile finally forming. “You know what the crazy part is?”

“What?”

“If she had just said, ‘Hey, I miscalculated—can we split this?’ I would’ve understood. It’s the pretending like she never said she’d cover it that got to me.”

Anthony squeezed her hand. “Then that’s your answer. It’s not about money. It’s about respect.”

Shayla nodded.

Outside, the city lights still shimmered, but now they felt softer, less harsh. The night hadn’t gone the way she expected, but at least she had clarity.
